Case Study

Capacity Building for a Global Nonprofit

Client Situation & Challenge

This 10-year-old nonprofit organization was founded with a compelling and deeply personal mission: to develop leadership in high school girls in the Pacific Northwest while funding programs and scholarships that support girls in rural parts of Africa to complete their high school education. By investing in education, the organization plays a critical role in disrupting cycles of poverty for these girls, their families, and their communities.

Over the course of a decade, the organization experienced steady growth. Its membership expanded, the number of girls supported internationally increased, and awareness of its mission gained meaningful traction. Despite this success, the organization’s infrastructure had not evolved at the same pace. It continued to be volunteer led almost solely by its founder, with guidance from a group of trusted friends serving in an informal advisory capacity rather than as a formal governing body.

As the organization reached a critical inflection point, it became clear that continued growth and impact would require a shift from a founder-led model to a more sustainable, governance-driven structure. The organization needed to establish a formal board of directors with clear fiduciary and strategic responsibilities, define working committees, and develop both a strategic plan and a comprehensive fund development strategy.

The core challenge was twofold: to build the internal structure and discipline required for current operational effectiveness, while also positioning the organization for long-term sustainability, scalability, and increased impact.

Solution & Methodology

In response, we implemented a comprehensive organizational development strategy focused on strengthening governance, building sustainable infrastructure, and positioning the organization for long-term growth and impact.

Governance & Board Development

We worked closely with the founder to transition from an informal advisory model to a formal, high-functioning board of directors. This included recruiting board members based on the specific skills, experience, and diversity needed to support this unique nonprofit. We established a clear committee structure with defined roles, responsibilities, and job descriptions, enabling the board to operate with greater accountability and strategic focus. In parallel, we updated bylaws and governing documents to reflect best practices in nonprofit governance and align with the organization’s evolving needs.

Brand, Communications & Positioning

To support growth and visibility, we refined the organization’s external presence by revising its website and strengthening key communication and marketing assets. This ensured that the organization’s story, mission, and impact were clearly and compellingly communicated to stakeholders, donors, and partners.

Fund Development Strategy

We designed a comprehensive, multi-channel fund development strategy to diversify and strengthen revenue streams. Central to this strategy was the creation of a flagship fundraising event grounded deeply in the organization’s mission. The event was intentionally designed to honor and reflect the lived experiences, culture, and richness of the African communities it supports, creating a meaningful and differentiated donor experience. Positioned as an annual anchor, this event now serves as the foundation for year-round fundraising efforts.

To complement this, we developed additional high-impact fundraising strategies, including experiential opportunities such as mission-aligned travel to Africa, further deepening donor engagement and connection to the organization’s work. We also aligned these efforts with grassroots fundraising led by high school girls in Pacific Northwest-based clubs, reinforcing leadership development while expanding community-based revenue generation.

And, donor management was uplifted with a structured approach and enhancements to the donor management system, regular communication, and targeted outreach.

Executive Leadership & Strategic Advising

Working closely with the Executive Director, we facilitated critical discussions and planning around long-term sustainability. This included clarifying growth plans, initiating succession planning, and exploring the development of leadership infrastructure in Africa to strengthen local ownership and program effectiveness.

Through this integrated approach, the organization was equipped not only with the structures and strategies needed for immediate effectiveness, but also with a clear path toward sustainable growth and expanded global impact.

Outcome & Impact

In the short term, the newly established board structure, clarified roles, and aligned committee model enabled more efficient decision-making, stronger accountability, and increased momentum across key initiatives. The strategic plan provided focus and prioritization, while enhanced fundraising strategies—anchored by a compelling flagship fundraising event and diversified revenue streams—generated increased visibility, donor engagement, and near-term financial stability.

At the same time, these changes laid the foundation for long-term sustainability. A thoughtfully composed and engaged board positioned the organization for ongoing governance excellence and resource development, while the strategic plan created a roadmap for measured, mission-aligned growth. Strengthened fundraising infrastructure and donor relationships established a more predictable and scalable funding model. Together, these elements ensured that the organization is not only able to meet its current demands, but is also well-positioned to evolve, expand its reach, and deepen its impact for years to come.
